Is Dairy OK for your Pet?

There is a big debate in today’s society and a lot of conflicting arguments as to whether or not milk is OK to give to your cat or dog.  To keep it simple, your pets are just like humans in the sense that they can be lactose intolerant, and most probably are. This is due to a type of sugar called lactose. In order for your pet to digest milk, lactose has to be broken apart into two basic sugars. Your pet has to produce an enzyme known as lactase. Lactase’s job is to split lactose but most bodies can’t do this due to pets getting older (its quite normal to not produce enough). As they age and produce less lactase it often results in an intolerance. Although you must remember some cats and dogs may not have any problems, they do not need to consume dairy.

It is highly recommended by veterinarians to avoid milk altogether.  Cats and dogs just don’t need it and the potential problems far outweigh the potential benefits. Feed your pet premium pet food so there is no need to worry about whether or not your precious cat or dog is receiving enough nutrients and vitamins.

Signs and symptoms of intolerance include acute intestinal distress such as gas, diarrhea and vomiting.
