Rabbits 10 Hoppin’ Facts

Rabbit’s ears are made of plush, and lined with lovely pink; they tell him when he ought to rush, or when to stop and think!

Coming into summer, it is important to remember to groom your bunny. Rabbits are by nature meticulous self-groomers, but this doesn’t mean that their humans do not also need to groom them. Your bunny should be brushed at least twice a week, long haired rabbits daily.

Both short and long haired breeds shed, with the longer haired bunnies being particularly prone to matting of their fur. It is important to address fur-matting, as it can become uncomfortable, tight and painful when left unattended. Regular grooming with a quality gentle brush for your bunnies delicate skin which will not only help to remove loose hair and dirt, it will also give you a good chance to examine your rabbit for any signs of fleas.

Signs include: the fleas themselves, flea dirt and larvae, excessive scratching, hair loss and bite marks. Spring and summer is flea season, though they can affect rabbits year-round and your bunny needs protection from these pests as they can cause anemaia (low hemoglobin in the blood due to loss of blood), especially in young rabbits, and are generally uncomfortable to be infested with. Rabbits can also develop a hypersensitive reaction to fleabite, with excessive scratching and itching that can sometimes lead to lesions on the skin’s surface and skin infections.

Controlling fleas is a matter of prevention and observation. Revolution or Advantage can be used to combat fleas, in conjunction with flea combs. You can find Advantage and Revolution flea treatments at your local Just For Pets store.
